Genshin Impact Fishing
Fishing is a major system in Genshin Impact, that expands gameplay and introduces a new way to enjoy the game! With Fishing players can catch fish to obtain food materials but also gain achievements and various rewards. You can also get The Catch, a powerful 4-Star Polearm.
It is also possible to raise the fish you catch in a special furniture pool, in your Serenitea Pot realm! There are a few requirements before you can start fishing in though. First of all you must have unlocked the Housing, Serenitea Pot system. The other requirement is to complete the quest “Exploding Population“. Once both of these requirements have been met, you can start fishing!

Fishing Gameplay & Progression in Genshin Impact
The gameplay for Fishing is pretty straightforward. You will need the right tools(rod and bait) so you can catch fish at the right location. You can craft bait at a crafting bench, by using a variety of common materials. There are four types of Bait and each one is good for catching specific types of fish. The Baits are:
- Fruit Paste Bait, suitable for Medakas, Dawncatchers, Crystalfish
- Redrot Bait, suitable for Sticklebacks, Bettas, Venomspine Fish, Akai Maou, Snowstriders
- False Worm Bait, suitable for Shirakodai, Angelfish, Ray
- Fake Fly Bait, suitable for Koi, Pufferfish
- Sugardew Bait, suitable for Marlin, Deep Waves, Anglers
You cannot fish anywhere. There are specific areas of water where fishing is allowed. These areas are easily identified by ripples on the surface of the water. Ripples on water indicate a Fishing Point. Interacting with the point will begin the Fishing activity.
Not all Fishing Points contain the same types of Fish. You can check what kind of fish you can catch at a specific location and choose your rod and bait accordingly. Day and Night cycles also affect the type of fish you can find at a Fishing point. Once a point is empty it will refresh again in three days.
It is possible to exchange the fish you catch for various fishing rods with different traits. There is a fishing association in every major area of the game. Getting a rod appropriate for each area will increase your chances of catching fish there.
Fishing Mini-Game in Genshin Impact
Finding the right spot to fish is one part of the system. Actually catching fish is another and quite important! Fishing has its own mini-game! To begin, hold the rod to enter aiming mode. Release to flick your bait and hook out. You must be careful though. Landing near a fish will scare it away, landing too far will fail to lure it. The goal is to land your hook as close as possible without scaring the fish away.
Once a fish got the bait, pres the key to raise the hook before it can get away. At this point the fish will start struggling and you will have to adjust your fishing line tension by holding and releasing the fish button. You gain progress if you manage to keep tension in the yellow tension zone. Fill the progress bar to successfully catch the fish.
Sometimes a fish will enter a period of intense struggle. When that happens the speed at which tension changes goes up and the ideal tension zone will turn orange. If your progress drops to zero, the tension zone will turn red and the fish might escape. Process your fish to get meat, exchange for new rods and Weapons like the 4-Star Polearm “The Catch” and its refinement materials from the Inazuma Fishing Association or the 4-Star “End of the Line” Bow from the Fishing Association of Sumeru!
Ornamental Fish in Genshin Impact
This is a special type of fish that can be raised once caught, in your Housing realm. Fishing areas with such fish will have more obvious ripple effects to recognize them easily. You can raise those inside the “Pool of Sapphire Grace” furniture in the Serenitea Pot. You can get the blueprint at the Liyue Fishing Association.
